Hulukou

The Romance of the Three Kingdoms

Hulukou is a pass on the way to North Yiling, memorable in the account of Cao Cao’s retreat after the Battle of Red Cliffs as a temporary rest point that turns into another ambush site. Its position along the route shapes Cao Cao’s choices, while his repeated confidence that he has outguessed his pursuers leaves his weakened force exposed.

Setting and Route

After torrential rain, Cao Cao’s men are exhausted and hungry. Following a fork in the road, Cao Cao’s party takes the route toward Hulukou, the pass on the way to North Yiling. The men have been on the move through a retreat marked by fatigue and shortages; at the pass, Cao Cao orders a rest.

The stop is practical but precarious. The soldiers cook food, the horses are turned loose, and the men try to dry their wet clothes. The party’s halt gives its pursuers time to close in, making the pass a point where the geography of the retreat intersects with the danger of pursuit.

Cao Cao’s Misjudgment

At Hulukou, Cao Cao laughs that his opponents have failed to ambush him in a place especially suited to attacking exhausted men. The irony is immediate: war cries break out around the party just after he speaks. His laughter, which signals confidence in his reading of the terrain, is followed by another sudden reversal.

Cao Cao discards his armor and escapes on horseback. Most of his men have no time to mount before Zhang Fei’s attackers surround them. Zhang Fei questions captives in an effort to learn where Cao Cao has gone, but Zhang Liao and Xu Huang engage him and deliberately hold him back long enough for Cao Cao to get away. Zhang Fei then breaks free and resumes the pursuit.

Narrative Significance

Hulukou belongs to a sequence of perilous stopping points in Cao Cao’s flight: a pause that appears to offer rest becomes the occasion for another attack. The episode contrasts Cao Cao’s confidence in anticipating an ambush with the vulnerability of an army worn down by hunger, rain, and flight. The pass does not end his escape, but the attack there further separates him from his men and renews the pursuit by Zhang Fei.
